LACTATION & WELLNESS ROOMS

POLICY AREA

Lactation / Wellness Rooms

PURPOSE

It is the intent of Pellissippi State Community College (PSCC) to comply with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 (as amended thereafter, ADAAA), the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 (FLSA)(as amended by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (PPACA)), the December 29, 2022 PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act, as well as any and all other applicable federal and state laws and provide lactation and wellness rooms for students and employees of Pellissippi State Community College on all its campuses.

General Guidelines

Availability: All designated rooms are private and are available on a first come first serve basis.

Time Limit: The allotted time for utilizing the room is 30 minutes. Please be considerate of others who may also need access the room. No personal items may be left inside the room. The College is not responsible for any items that have been removed.

Privacy: It is important to take into account that the room may already be occupied. Before knocking and causing an unnecessary disruption, please first check the outside door handle to see if the rotating indicator is green (the room is vacant) or red (the room is occupied). There may also be a hanging sign to indicate whether the room is vacant or occupied. These measures are provided to give all individuals privacy and to minimize disturbances to the extent possible.

Cleaning & Sanitizing: Individuals must keep the room safe and sanitized so other individuals can also utilize the room for their needs. All surfaces must be wiped clean and all trash properly disposed. No personal items may be left in the room with the exception of nursing parents needing to store their breast milk in the refrigerator.

Lactation Guidelines

Nursing Parents:

Amenities: Each room has the following amenities: chair, table, electrical outlet, paper towels, Clorox wipes, and an inside door lock with an outer rotating red/green indicator to indicate vacancy/occupancy. Most wellness rooms have a sink available inside the room. Otherwise, there are accessible kitchenettes with sinks within a few feet of the room. It is important to note that the College does not provide nursing parents with the following: pump and necessary pumping accessories; bottles; storage bags; coolers; and/or ice packs.

Breast Milk Storage: Most of the designated rooms have a refrigerator made accessible for nursing parents to store their breast milk. If nursing parents choose to utilize a room that does not have a refrigerator to store their breast milk, they can store their breast milk in a designated room that has a refrigerator or opt to bring their own cooler with ice packs to store their breast milk while on campus. All nursing parents using refrigerators should provide their contact information on their breast milk. Any breast milk still stored in the refrigerator by 4:30 p.m. on the last school day for that week will be disposed. The College is not responsible for any breast milk stored in the refrigerator. Only breast milk stored in the refrigerator will be permitted to remain in the room.
